DMXite™ is a lighting control platform designed for DJs, Bands, Hospitality and Event Spaces–without the complicated setup and learning. The heart of DMXite is™ the digital processing engine we so affectionally call Multi-Unit Sound Interface Control — or MUSIC™, for short.
Most small venues, DJs, bands, and other environments do not have the resources on-hand to operate a sophisticated lighting rig. This is where DMXite™ comes in–we create the light show for you based on the sound, beat, and energy from the music.
Two Configurations, One Solution
Smaller configurations such as DJs, small bands, and small venues have simpler but similar needs as hospitality when it comes to the result. Accurate and synchronized sound activated light control are the real goals for many without all the heavy learning and support that comes with programming a lighting rig and show. I have talked to DJs and bands that both would love to have the very option we are building.
Large venues such as hospitality and locations with multiple event spaces face similar obstacles. In most cases these venues also do not have employees who are capable of configuring and programming a lighting rig and show. Like smaller performers, hotels and small venues want lights that coordinate with the music, but they need centralized control with flexibility. The bonus for these venues can be increased rental revenue, as well.
But our lights have a sound activation mode already?
Many devices have a built-in sound activation mode that will trigger flashes and movement based on the sound it picks up. This can work ok in some cases, but if you have more than a couple lights or if your lights are any distance apart or away from the sound source, good luck getting the show you want and deserve. Sound takes a while to travel compared to electricity so a DMX-connected lighting rig that responds to commands will always perform better, more reliably, and more consistently synchronized than basic sound mode on the fixtures.
What isn’t DMXite™?
DMXite™ is targeted towards smaller, more basic configurations, but it can control many fixtures without issue. What DMXite™ cannot do is large, programmed complicated light shows like you might be accustomed to. DMXite™ was built to do one thing–to run a light show based on the sound of the music. It has some additional features you can trigger such as Blinder, Fireworks, Strobe, and more which can be triggered with a touchscreen device, a foot pedal controller, or a small wireless device that can be mounted somewhere convenient such as a mic stand or on a guitar. The DMXite roadmap includes a larger solution for hospitality, but still focuses on the small venue operation.
About the Founder, Troy Young
I am an electronic engineer by education and at heart. Sparked at a young age (no pun intended) by the fascinating world of electronics I began exploring and learning what these magical devices were and how they worked. After working at all levels of Information technology for over three decades I found myself back at my roots, specifically with sound equipment, music, and lighting controls.
In late 2025 I put myself in the position of having to learn how to use DMX and put on a decent light show with music at the resort where I work. I had an idea what DMX was, but had not looked at it in any detail. I asked a few people I knew and the usual answer would be something like they had purchased some lights but haven’t had time to learn it. First, to me that means their interest is not in running the lights. Secondly, another reasons is that I have yet to meet a musician or DJ that told me their client complained about their lights.
So why use something like DMXite™ if not one really cares anyway? To me it is about doing right by your customers to put on the best show possible. The addition of something like DMXite™ is such a minor investment that can greatly enhance your show and your customer deserves it. My theory of customer service is probably a little unique but I believe it makes sense. Rather than having a transaction where the relationship is over after both parties are satisfied, that first exchange should be the start of a relationship. That relationship may yield benefits for either party in the future. Customers DESERVE the reality of expectations exceeded.
Why should I use DMXite™?
The better question might be, “Who shouldn’t be using DMXite™?” I believe the answer to that is likely lighting designers and operators who want granular and programmable control and those who likely do larger light shows. It is my observation that many DJs and bands would like to have something that does sound activation properly and keeps light activity synchronized. And that option should include affordability, stability, and ease of use with a few handy features and options. Most setups for working DJs and smaller bands are overall fairly simple because they need durability and portability, along with that ease of use.
Much of what I state are simply my observations from being in a location that books bands and DJs, as well as having spent many hours in bar band venues. I have simply applied my knowledge and interest to the things I observed and challenges I somewhat faced trying to learn DMX. The tutorials I watched and worked through were just confusing and then I bought a couple DMX light fixtures and a DMX USB cable. I was able to then use open-source software to test the features and addresses and it clicked.
To me, DMX addressing was simple and everyone was somehow making it sound difficult. What clicked for me was it reminded me of studying memory address mapping when I was a teenager. Once I realized how simple it was I had a much firmer grip on the basics and where to start. To be honest, it frustrated me that it was far easier in reality–at least to me.
The Quest
Then came my quest for the best way to control the lights. In our work environment I can confidently say that as long as lights are moving with the music, there will be no complaints. It really is that simple because if we do not implement the capability, the alternative is nothing. After a bit of research I decided to purchase what was billed as an Ai based controller that appeared to do more than just sound reaction.
When I first set up the fixtures it was fairly simple to configure and overall seems to work well. The only thing that appears to me, and I don’t know if it’s just me being picky but it just did not seem to react so much to the sound. It showed activity on the lights and sometimes it would appear to be reacting to the music. I have never been able to troubleshoot that to get more accuracy and I have a pretty solid understanding of the device.
To further complicate using the device, it’s built-in hotspot would only pick up a device within about 15 feet or so. I did not always want to be that close to the band or DJ, so it was simply an inconvenience. I did not initially understand that it could be switched from a hotspot to a WiFi connected device with a static IP address, so that now makes it a bit easier to manage. Some of my difficulty is self-inflicted such as the WiFi issue, but that is a large part of what has driven me to learn.
What are your goals?
My dream is a larger vision that I cannot share complete details at the moment but that vision starts with the initial launch of DMXite™. I started to experiment a bit with sound detection with that larger goal in mind. I then broke it down to the smallest functional part that would be a integral component of the larger vision, yet still completely function on its own. This is where DMXite™ for working DJs and small venue bands comes in.
I am using DMXite™ every opportunity I get with music and bands that perform. Nearly every evening and weekend I work on the programming to improve features. So far, in every test and side by side comparison it performs better than any solution I have tried or observed. I have invested in a bit of hardware to experiment with such as computers and touchscreens to build prototypes. Just recently I made a mistake that caused the lights to stop reacting just a few seconds into a song and it was a learning experience. I was then able to correct a bit of a loophole that caused the reaction not to perform.
The adventure in building and testing DMXite™ with various fixtures has been and continues to be an amazing experience and I appreciate everyone’s support!
